Developmental coordination disorder affects about 5-6% of school aged children. Children with DCD have a hard time with activities that require movement skills and coordination. Physical therapy will help children with DCD improve their muscle strength, coordination, balance, and help them learn skills to participate in school and with their peers at their full potential.
In the midst of challenges, let not all hope be lost! Children with DCD often benefit greatly from skilled therapies, such as physical therapy to work on gross motor skills (running, bike riding, ball skills, etc) and occupational therapy to work on fine motor skills (dressing, writing, grip strength, etc), with both therapies working on core strength and coordination skills within their specialities.
